Dental veneers (porcelain veneers) are bonded to the front of a patient’s teeth, changing the color, shape, size or length. Our Arizona dentists can custom-make veneers from porcelain or resin composite materials. The veneers are durable, stain resistant and feel like natural teeth.

Are your teeth yellow, stained, cracked or crooked? Let Dr. Wiitala take a look and see if Veneers or Lumineers are right for you. Each patient is completely different and therefore needs a custom approach to get the cosmetic result they are looking for. During the consultation with Dr. Wiitala, with his guidance, you select the size, shape, and color that’s best for you. You will also discuss the best and most comfortable treatment for you.

Types Of Veneers Offered By Dr. Wiitala

Dr. Wiitala offers two types of veneers:

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers typically resist stains better than resin veneers while also resembling natural teeth more accurately. In addition, the porcelain veneers our Scottsdale dentists apply will provide both strength and resilience comparable to a patient’s natural tooth enamel.

Resin Veneers

Resin veneers are thinner in size and thus, require less tooth surface removal when applying this cosmetic dental solution. Our dentists here at Eric Wiitala DDS will be sure to guide you toward the better option for your oral health situation after a consultation at our dental office.

Who is a Candidate For Dental Veneers?

As long as your teeth and oral health are good, pretty much anyone is a good candidate to improve his or her smile with porcelain or resin veneers. They cover all kinds of aesthetic issues with your teeth.

You need to understand that veneers are not a one-and-done procedure. Because Dr. Wiitala needs to remove some of your tooth enamel to make room for the veneers, these teeth will always need to be covered with a veneer or a crown. And due to the life expectancy of your veneers, you’ll need to have them replaced at least once or twice in your lifetime, more often with resin veneers.

Do Veneers Fix Underlying Problems?

It’s important to note that dental veneers are only a cosmetic solution to imperfections with your teeth; they don’t address oral health problems such as decay. Issues such as gum disease, decay, or a deep crack that endangers a tooth need to be taken care of before veneers can be applied.

The Dental Veneer Procedure

Dental veneers require two appointments with Dr. Wiitala. We start with a thorough cleaning. We may opt to perform some whitening if your teeth are stained from coffee and the like; this will return them to their natural color. To match that natural color, Dr. Wiitala uses a shade guide to determine the veneer color.

Next, we prepare your teeth for the veneers. To do this, Dr. Wiitala shaves a tiny amount of the enamel from the front of the teeth (from 0.3 mm to 0.5 mm). This makes room for the veneers on the front side of each tooth. When this process is complete, we take impressions of your teeth and send these off to the dental lab for the fabrication of your custom veneers. In most cases, this takes around one to two weeks. In the meantime, Dr. Wiitala will attach temporary veneers to your teeth to protect them.

When your veneers arrive at our office, you return for your second appointment. Dr. Wiitala checks the fit and the color match of each veneer. If necessary, he may shave a bit off here or there. Once satisfied with the fit, the veneers are permanently cemented onto your teeth. You can use them immediately.

How Long you can expect your Veneers To Last

The health of your teeth holding the veneers affects their longevity. If you practice good home hygiene and keep your twice-yearly professional cleanings and exams with Dr. Wiitala, your veneers will last for their expected lifespans.

Composite veneers last from 4-8 years. They are more porous than porcelain, so are susceptible to staining (although still not to the degree of natural tooth enamel). Composite veneers can also chip easier.

Porcelain veneers can last from 12-25 years. They are highly resistant to staining and are very strong.

How Much Do Veneers Cost?

The cost of your veneers varies according to how many teeth they are being applied to. Porcelain veneers usually cost about double what composite veneers do, but they also last twice as long. We will discuss what your veneers will cost once Dr. Wiitala considers your unique situation.

Possible Risks Of The Veneer Procedure

Dental veneers are considered a very low-risk procedure. The main risk is for permanent sensitivity to hot and cold. This is very rare. Usually any sensitivity passes in a few weeks.
You do need to remember that the teeth with veneers will always need to have veneers (or a crown), however. This process is not reversible because some of the enamel is removed to make room for the veneer. Without a veneer covering the tooth, it is susceptible to decay and damage
