Juvéderm

What is Juvéderm?

Juvéderm is a dermal filler. Actually, it is a family of filler products that have each been formulated with hyaluronic acid in a gel base. The reason that there is more than one Juvéderm product is because there are different signs of aging, and each cannot possibly be addressed successfully with a singular form of treatment. What makes these products different from other fillers is the Hylacross, or cross-linking process that creates a tightly bound chain of hyaluronic acid to promote lasting effects.

The areas of the body Juvéderm treats

Juvéderm is an excellent filler product for concerns such as lip lines, laugh lines, or nasolabial folds, marionette lines from the mouth to the chin, lines at the corners of the mouth, and for deflated cheeks.

How does Juvéderm work?

Juvéderm replenishes stores of hyaluronic acid in the skin. Hyaluronic acid is one type of amino sugar that is classified as a glycosaminoglycan, or GAG. The role of a GAG is to draw moisture into the spaces between collagen and elastin that make up the connective tissue beneath the skin. As we age, the body naturally makes less of all three of these substances. Without adequate hyaluronic acid, we notice a loss of elasticity and volume, which ultimately leads to fine lines, wrinkles, and other concerns. After treatment, water molecules will be drawn to the injected hyaluronic acid, where they will bind to the sugar compound for lasting volume.

Candidates for Juvéderm Treatments

Do you struggle with the appearance of lines and creases between your nose and mouth? Nasolabial folds are one of the most common complaints treated with Juvéderm. Men and women also seek treatment to restore greater definition to facial features like the cheeks and the jawline.
Juvéderm is used to treat static wrinkles, as opposed to dynamic wrinkles that result from facial expressions (that is a job for Botox). The restoration of adequate volume can rejuvenate the lips and the entire face!

What are the risks of Juvéderm?

Juvéderm products have been put through rigorous testing and clinical trials. This family of fillers has been used around the world for many years, and side effects have been well-documented. Most patients experience redness and swelling that is so mild that they can easily resume normal activities immediately following treatment. In some cases, minor bruising, bumps, or skin irritation may occur. The side effects of Juvéderm treatment are short-lived in most patients.

How long Juvéderm treatments last

One of the advantages of Juvéderm and other injectable treatments is that there is no need for downtime, and each treatment takes only a few minutes. The typical treatment appointment is completed in about 20 minutes. No allergy testing or pre-treatment is necessary.

How long do Juvéderm results last?

Juvéderm treatment results in the immediate improvement in facial aesthetics. However, patients may continue to notice that the skin becomes smoother and more supple looking as the product settles beneath the skin. Positive changes may continue for up to two weeks as substructures become better hydrated. The manufacturer of Juvéderm, Allergan, reports that results from this treatment process may last from 9 to 12 months. This can depend on the treatment area, and also on your body’s natural metabolism of the product.

How much Juvéderm treatment can cost

Using injectables like Juvéderm is one of the most cost-effective ways to minimize the signs of aging on the face, neck, and hands. Treatment costs are dependent on the amount of product that is needed. This is determined by the severity of creases or volume loss and the size of the treatment area.

When Will I See Results from Juvéderm®?

The hyaluronic acid that makes up the Juvéderm filler begins to work immediately. As soon as it is injected, the HA particles bind to water molecules, plumping the target area. You can expect to leave the office looking and feeling like a fresh new You!

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

One Juvéderm treatment achieves results that can last a year or longer. Your body will naturally dissolve the hyaluronic acid over time, which will release the water molecules that have been bound in place. As the effects of your injections diminish, you can schedule a touch-up to refresh your appearance.

How is Juvéderm® Different from Botox®?

Juvéderm is a dermal filler. It works by injecting hyaluronic acid into deeper layers of the skin. Hyaluronic acid tethers water molecules, which add structure and volume to the skin. Botox is a neuromodulator. It is injected into superficial muscles that are tugging on the skin, causing wrinkles. Botox works by relaxing the treated muscle, thereby releasing the tug on the skin so it can lie smooth and appear more youthful.

Can Juvéderm® Migrate?

Your dermal filler can migrate but this is very rare. The doctor uses a conservative technique that deposits just enough product to achieve natural-looking results, which reduces the risk of migration. Injections are also spaced apart to prevent too much filler in one area. After receiving injections, you can manage your risk of your filler migrating by following your post-treatment instructions. Primarily, while it can be helpful to gently massage the area to smooth out the filler, this should not be done repeatedly.

Should I Get Juvéderm® if I’m Pregnant?

It is not recommended to receive Juvéderm or other injectables when pregnant. During pregnancy, changing hormone levels can increase swelling and bleeding after treatment. Studies have also not been performed to confirm the overall safety profile of dermal fillers on pregnant women.
