Juvéderm is a dermal filler. Actually, it is a family of filler products that have each been formulated with hyaluronic acid in a gel base. The reason that there is more than one Juvéderm product is because there are different signs of aging, and each cannot possibly be addressed successfully with a singular form of treatment. What makes these products different from other fillers is the Hylacross, or cross-linking process that creates a tightly bound chain of hyaluronic acid to promote lasting effects.
Juvéderm is an excellent filler product for concerns such as lip lines, laugh lines, or nasolabial folds, marionette lines from the mouth to the chin, lines at the corners of the mouth, and for deflated cheeks.
Juvéderm replenishes stores of hyaluronic acid in the skin. Hyaluronic acid is one type of amino sugar that is classified as a glycosaminoglycan, or GAG. Juvéderm is a dermal filler. It works by injecting hyaluronic acid into deeper layers of the skin. Hyaluronic acid tethers water molecules, which add structure and volume to the skin. Botox is a neuromodulator. It is injected into superficial muscles that are tugging on the skin, causing wrinkles. Botox works by relaxing the treated muscle, thereby releasing the tug on the skin so it can lie smooth and appear more youthful.
Your dermal filler can migrate but this is very rare. The doctor uses a conservative technique that deposits just enough product to achieve natural-looking results, which reduces the risk of migration. Injections are also spaced apart to prevent too much filler in one area. After receiving injections, you can manage your risk of your filler migrating by following your post-treatment instructions. Primarily, while it can be helpful to gently massage the area to smooth out the filler, this should not be done repeatedly.
It is not recommended to receive Juvéderm or other injectables when pregnant. During pregnancy, changing hormone levels can increase swelling and bleeding after treatment. Studies have also not been performed to confirm the overall safety profile of dermal fillers on pregnant women.
